I May Not be Perfect: My Struggle with Self Love

I wrote a post a while back where I mentioned the things I would change about myself if I could afford plastic surgery. It wasn’t meant to be totally serious, but they were things I have thought about. It didn’t take very long for someone to point out that I can be a little hard on myself sometimes, and that I should start focusing on the things I love about myself instead of the things I don’t.

Its true. I can judge myself a little to harshly. Sometimes I pick apart my body. Weigh myself daily. Question how good my clothes looks on me. I wonder if my voice is irritating, or if I talk too much. Am I fun to be around or do people find me annoying? Am I really as pretty as I think I am?

I’m a girl with a mountain of insecurities and a personality that causes me to tend to dwell on the negatives. Those are two things that do not go well together my friends, not at all. The only way to overcome these things is to make a conscious effort to be happy with myself exactly the way I am, and to acknowledge the things I love about myself. Focus on the positives.

– I’ve got super long hair. I’ve got tons of styling options, if only I knew how to do them.

– Even when my abs go into hiding, it doesn’t take a whole lot to coax them back out to play.

– I’ve got a pretty big heart. When I love, I love hard.

– Thanks to nearly three years of braces, I’ve got decently straight set of chompers.

– For the most part my complexion is pretty good.

– I can rock bangs.

– My eyes are a pretty cool shade of green.

– My legs are bangin’. They look great in dresses and shorts, especially when I’m wearing heels.

– I happen to think my derriere is pretty fab. Its not too big, and not too small.

Even though I struggle with insecurities on the daily, it really wasn’t very hard for me to come up with a bunch of things I love about myself. It also wasn’t very hard to find a bunch of selfies to demonstrate all those qualities I’m happy with.

What about you? Do you get down on yourself easily too?

An Easter Weekend Recap

I know weekend recaps haven’t been cool for a long time. But I don’t really care, cause I had a great weekend.

– My friend Allie and I threw my cousin Erika a surprise party for her 30th birthday on Thursday. She’s never had a surprise party before, so she was pretty happy.

– I forgot that I am a total lightweight when it comes to alcohol these days, and I ended up falling asleep on Erika’s couch around midnight. I probably shouldn’t have tried to keep pace with the boys and slammed all those Bud Lights.

– Jeff felt left out, and needed to have his picture taken on Erika’s lap too. We ain’t ever growin’ up yo.

– I made the three hour drive home on Friday. It was a bit rough given the festivities the night before.

– My monsters were home from Alberta for Easter break. I got to spend Friday night and most Saturday playing with them and teaching miss Myia how to drive a snowmobile.

– Sunday morning was spent being super lazy and watching HGTV with my momma. House Hunters, Leave it to Bryan, Property Virgins, we just can’t get enough of it.

– Sadly I don’t get Easter Monday off work, so I had to drive back Sunday afternoon. I spent the evening catching up on some tv and making a few tweaks to this place. My Daily Reads page is back up and running. Its a lot less flashy, but at least it works again.

Hope you all had an equally wonderful Easter weekend!

Using My Time Wisely, or Something Like That

I don’t prewrite posts as a rule. Mostly because that requires more organization and planning than I tend to like to put into anything. We could probably rename this little piece of the interwebz The Procrastination Station.

But hey, every once in a while its good to shake things up. Right?

Who am I trying to kid? The only reason this thing is being written right now is because its 2am and I can’t sleep. I guess that is what happens when you have a two hour nap after work. Oops.

So here I am, lying in bed, watching Being Mary Jane (have you seen it? cause you should!) and making notes to remind myself of the things I need to do. Like take out the trash. And no I don’t mean my ex-boyfriend’s skank of an ex-girlfriend who likes to make snarky comments on everything on Facebook, who I really should block but her train wreck of a life is just far too entertaining. I mean the literal trash. Although I shouldn’t need a reminder for that, cause it kinda stinks. And really I should just be less lazy.

Moving on.

I’m the kinda girl who spend far too much time pinning recipes, yet I skip over the posts my favorite bloggers write about food. It makes no sense really. But perhaps its because its easier to look at pictures of food I’ll never make than to read a whole post about it.

But I guess I wasn’t really joking about the shaking things up, because on Monday I actually read Sparkle Pony’s entire post about Raspberry Summer Salad and then I did something even crazier. I went to Coleman’s, picked up the ingredients and went home and made it. And OMG it was AH-MAZ-ING. Pretty sure I died and went to heaven after my very first bite. So I made it again. And truth be told I’ll probably make it for dinner for the third night in a row. Its just that good.

Of course in true Kathryn fashion, I tweaked the recipe just a little and added some spinach, because yum, swapped the sunflower seeds for almonds, and added grilled chicken instead of the turkey.

And then because I wanted to make sure I followed all the proper Blogger Etiquette rules and properly honor miss Whitney Ellen, I paired it with a delicious glass of The Bend in the River Riesling.

These pictures just don’t do it justice. You should really really really try this one out yourselves guys. Whitney was right, it was quick, easy and painless. Just the way I like my “cooking” to be. Its super healthy (fits in well with my plans to get in shape), but doesn’t taste like it is. And its shmancy enough that I totally plan to use it to impress dinner guests sometime. You know, if I ever have dinner guests.

Anywhoodles, peace, love, and try the damn salad.

No Excuses

I’ve been MIA for a month, again. This year really isn’t off to a very good start when it comes to blogging. I swear I’ve got an excellent excuse. But not really…

Work has been super busy, which of course is a great thing, except I tend to take a minute or two or sixty to catch up on my bloggy reading and to bang out a post each morning. But thats hard to do when you have a trainee hanging out in your office all day long, and you’re trying to set a good example. Clearly I’m more of a do as I say, not as I do type of person. And after work, well, I’ve just been so exhausted.

But I promise, no more excuses. I’ve got to make time for this. Because I love it. And I miss it when I’m way from it.

So to get myself back on track, lets start things off with my favorite go to for days like to day when I didn’t put very much thought into what I want to say here….

Currently I’m…

Eating – Nothing, because I slept in a little late today, and didn’t have enough time to grab anything for breakfast. Sleep over food yo.

Drinking – Hot chocolate. Le duh. This girl does not do coffee, and its still cold out, so I need a warm little pick me up in the morning.

Purchasing – Craft supplies to make decorations for my best friends bachelorette party. Being crafty helps save money, and occupies my time which keeps me from shopping when I’m bored. Win win.

Crafting – Wonderfully glittery decorations for Sarah’s last fling before the ring. I subscribe to the idea of “why buy it when I can make it for cheaper.” All the details of the party are going to be a surprise for the bride, so I’ll make my Pinterest board public as soon as the party is over. Until then, here’s a sneak peak of my Pinspiration.

Looking forward to – Getting this little blog back on track, summer, and heading out West for Sarah’s wedding & to see all my favorite people.
Watching – Just caught up on all the new episodes of Dallas. God love Jesse Metcalfe, he is fine.
Listening to – Best Day of My Life by American Authors. I almost wish I was getting married this summer (or at all), just so I could use this song at the ceremony. It may a bit too upbeat for some people’s taste, but I’d love it.

Loving – Pretty much everything in sight since I’m on a shopping diet. You know how it works…
Reading –  I finished the Divergent Trilogy a few weeks ago. It was awesome. I recommend you read it. But maybe not until after you have seen the movie. Cause as per usual, the books will make you pick the movie apart and you just won’t enjoy it as much.
Craving – Subway. I had it for supper last night. Its just something I can’t get enough of.
Feeling – Sore, because yesterday wasn’t Sunday Funday my friends. No, yesterday was Sunday Runday. I’m back on the exercise train and I’ve signed up for my first ever 5K. Its in three weeks, so I don’t have much time to get myself in shape. #KathrynsGettingFitWithVenus
Peacing out – Because I really do have a ton of work to get done.
